About medEmu
medEmu is an AI checker for the OET Writing test for nurses. It reads your referral, discharge or transfer letter against the case notes, estimates your OET Writing grade (A to E) and score out of 500, marks each of the six official OET Writing criteria (Purpose, Content, Conciseness & Clarity, Genre & Style, Organisation & Layout, Language), and marks the problems directly on your own sentences with the corrected version and the reason. You can take a timed practice test with 5 minutes' reading time, paste your own letter, or upload a photo of a handwritten answer, and get your first letter graded free without creating an account.
Who builds it
medEmu is a small, independent product for nurses preparing for the OET. There are no investors and no paid testimonials. The emu is the mascot. medEmu is not affiliated with or endorsed by OET or Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment.
How a letter is graded
- Your text, as written. A typed letter is used as is. A photo of a handwritten letter is transcribed first, with explicit instructions not to correct your spelling, grammar or wording, so the grader sees your mistakes.
- Read against the case notes. The grader is given the same case notes and writing task you had, so it can judge whether you selected the information this reader needs, left out what they don't, and reported it accurately.
- Marked against the six official criteria. A large language model, instructed to mark strictly as an OET Writing assessor would, returns a mark for Purpose (0–3), Content, Conciseness & Clarity, Genre & Style, Organisation & Layout and Language (each 0–7), with a verdict on each.
- The grade is calculated, not guessed. medEmu adds up the six marks (out of 38) and converts the total to an estimated score out of 500 and a grade (A, B, C+, C, D or E). OET does not publish its own conversion, so this step uses a simple, transparent linear estimate.
- Every correction is checked against your letter. The model has to quote the exact words it is correcting. medEmu then looks for each quote in your letter. Corrections that don't match anything you actually wrote are thrown away instead of shown, so every mark sits on a real phrase from your letter.
- Then: a projected grade (what the letter would earn with the fixes applied), a list of case notes you included, missed or should have left out, and a Grade A model letter for the same case notes.
How to read the grade
The grade is an estimate for practice, not an official OET result. Only OET assessors award official results. AI graders, ours included, can differ from an assessor and from one run to the next. Regulators set their own requirements — Grade B (350) is the most common for nurses, and some, such as the UK's NMC, accept C+ (300) in Writing — so always check with the regulator you are applying to.
What medEmu doesn't do
- Other OET professions, or the Listening, Reading and Speaking sub-tests. It covers Writing for Nursing only.
- Promise a grade. Nothing can.
- Sell your letters or use them to train AI models.
